Who do we serve?
We serve children in Rush and Shelby, through at no fault of their own, have been identified as victims of abuse and/or neglect. These children all have one thing in common. They need a voice. They need an advocate to ensure that their voice is heard in court.
CASA volunteers are sworn in as officers of the court in both Rush and Shelby County. Volunteers advocate objectively with the primary goal of reunification for the children and their parents.
What does a CASA do?
We research the facts thoroughly and use this information to determine whether court orders are being followed; whether a permanency plan has been created; whether appropriate services are being provided to the child and family; and whether the court ordered treatment plan is in compliance.
We provide a factual written report to the judge and speak on behalf of the child in the courtroom. We make recommendations in the court report regarding placement, visitation, and appropriate services for the child and the family.
We facilitate communication between parties in the case. We participate in Child Family Team Meetings (CFTMs) to discuss the case, review and receive updates regarding the services being provided. We meet with the children at their placement to develop a positive relationship.
We remain in communication with the court, observe changes in the child or family’s situation, and act as the eyes and ears of the judge until the case has achieved a permanent ending. We continue to monitor the needs of the child and their family to ensure that the services are provided and effective.
